Heart's Desire

by Jose Cruz Gonzalez

This play, about cultural values and the challenges confronting a Mexican-American soldier returning home after World War II, touches on many themes relevant to our community and the NAMC Cultural Competency Initiative in particular.  You will also be interested to note that a featured cast member is our own Sam Trevino, Community Relations Manager for Monterey County DSES , and Cultural Competency Initiative Steering Committee member!

Heart's Desire , by Jose Cruz Gonzalez, tells the story of a Mexican-American veteran of World War II who comes home transformed, feeling that anything is possible. He surprises his family with a new bride, a lovely French girl with her own tragic secret. With the help of the G.I. Bill he intends to farm a small piece of land. But his family and the townsfolk have not changed and he returns to the same prejudices that were faced by his father’s generation. A moving and unforgettable theatrical experience. (Some course language. May not be suitable for children under 13.)
